HOW TO SURVIVE A REMODELING PROJECT
Written by: Inez Haythorn Web Site: Christian Family Treasures |
With the cost of housing today, many families choose to build on or
remodel their existing homes. This is much more economical,
but it can also be a source of stress while it is in the
works. Whether you have hired contractors to do the job, or
your husband is able to do it himself, here are some tips to
help you through it.
1. Plan carefully first. Decide how much you are able to
spend on the project, and exactly what you want done. We
have done a lot of remodeling and building on to our house.
My husband has done most of the work himself, thankfully. At
times, the progress has been slowed down because we changed
our minds as we went along. Some of this has been good, but
too much variation from the original plan can be time
consuming and expensive! Make sure you know what you want.
Stay within your building plan and budget at least
reasonably well.
2. Be patient. I'm not normally a patient person at all, but
I have learned to be more so through our remodeling
projects. Pace yourselves so you are not exhausted or
accident prone.
3. Don't try to keep an immaculate house. It's probably not
going to happen during your building, so don't drive
yourself crazy trying to maintain it. Do your normal
cleaning and tidying up, but realize that there will be some
clutter and confusion till it's done.
4. Do try to keep normal routines. When everything seems out
of order, it is very comforting to fall back on daily
routines. They help keep us and our children more secure and
peaceful. Maintain regular and healthy meals, sleep
schedules, homework times for the kids, and exercise (if
you're not already getting that on the construction!).
5. Take time for fun and relaxation. This is so important.
Remodeling can be all-consuming. It can leave you tired,
stressed, and irritable. You really need to make yourself
stop working and schedule some restful and fun times. You
will also be more refreshed when you go back to your home
project. With careful planning, patience, and a good
attitude your remodeling experience can be pleasant and
rewarding.
